New Art Kicks Off the New Year
Tulsa. The Great Leap Northward?

The Great Leap Northward
Acrylic

Courtesy
of Eric Humphries
The Great Leap Northward is the
title of the latest painting by Oklahoma City based artist Eric Humphries.
It is also the way he is thinking about his up coming art show at
Living Arts in Tulsa. "This is the first time I have shown my artwork
in Tulsa and I am pretty excited about it," says Humphries. "I know my
art is a little out of the ordinary but I think that what I do is
important in it's own way."
What Humphries does is paint cartoonist renditions of true life
historical atrocities, such as the Mai Lai massacre, the bombing of
Hiroshima and the war in Iraq, just to name a few. "My goal is to
elicit sympathy for the victims and keep these horrific events in the
public's consciousness. Maybe if we remember that these terrible things
happened, then we will be less likely to repeat them in the future."
His canvases, complete with bright city scenes and big toothy grinned
soldiers blasting away at weeping civilian populations are a little
much for some, Humphries admits, but many people have been very
interested in his work lately. The self proclaimed Artistic Historian
has been able to sell nearly thirty of his colorful monstrosities in
just two years of exhibiting them and even earned a booth at last years
Festival of the Arts, which took many conservative OKC art fans by
surprise. The Living Arts show is sure to be much of the same as
Humphries will be showing, among many others, a four canvas series over
the September eleventh attacks entitled Heaven, Hell and the Earth,
which explores all aspects of the terrorists attacks on New York,
including the motives and perspectives of the terrorists themselves.
"People see my art in many different lights," Humphries said recently
about his paintings, "Some people get right away what I am trying to do
and congratulate me for my efforts. Others are appalled and afraid. And
then there are those who get angry. Sometimes I think they are angry
because the paintings force them to go places they would rather not be.
Real places they pretend don't exist. Really bad places."
The show, entitled Atrocities: Man's Inhumanities with a reception from
5p.m. until 8p.m. on Thursday , January 3, and runs through January 24
at Living Arts in Tulsa. Located at 308 S. Kenosha Ave. Tulsa Ok. For

Art for a Cause, the Past and
for Fun
Live4This
Artists
and friends Darshan Phillips, Aaron Whisner and Nic Trent have
collaborated to form the art team Live4This. Their studio creates art
of many media including prints, photos and design. This team likes to
challenge the status quo both within the art world and without.
“With inspiration we challenge, develop and push each other creatively.
We have a true passion for whatever it is we create...It’s what we live
for.” Whisner says, hence the inspiration for their name. With a
pop-art/vintage feel their prints and paintings speak for themselves
about the need for creativity and upheaval of the norm. Some previews
of their new work can be seen at www.live4this.com. The event will be
catered by Keo.
Vanessa Somerville, owner of the gallery and an
artist herself says, “This team of artists are truly hip and cutting
edge, they work well together and thus their work reflects many styles
and speaks to everyone differently.” SELF gallery is an alternative
place for Tulsa artists of all media to show their work. Somerville
feels it’s important to allow artists to express themselves however
they need to. Self is a place to foster and encourage creativity. SELF
gallery is located at 2012 E. 11th street, the opening will be held
from 7-10pm. For more information call Colleen McCarty at (918)

Edge
Art Now 2008 is Individual Artists of Oklahoma's 18th annual juried
exhibition of selected mixed media works with two categories of
competition—mixed media and installation art. For this exhibition,
"mixed media" is defined as two or more distinct—unquestionably and
readily distinguishable—media in one art piece. (For example:
working in two different painting media such as watercolor and oil will
not constitute mixed media.) Generally, "installation art" may include
three-dimensional, multimedia, or sculptural elements and engage
multiple senses as it strives to modify the way we experience a
particular space. The jurors will award $2,250 in prizes.
Eligible
artists must live in Oklahoma and be at least 18 years or older.
Full-time undergraduate students are not eligible, nor are works
completed as part of a university degree, workshop, or under private
instruction. Works must have been completed within the last two years.
Works included in previous Edge Art Now exhibitions are not eligible.
Consistent with IAO's mission, work that is intellectually and
aesthetically provocative or experimental in subject matter or
technique will be given priority.
The
Jurors for EdgeArtNow 2008 are D.J. Lafon and Rea Baldridge. Entry fees
are $15 for non-members $10 for current members. Entry deadline is
postmarked by Monday, Feb. 18, 2008. Delivery dates for accepted work
are Friday, Feb. 29, and Saturday, Mar. 1, 2008. Juror reserves the
right to reject any work that differs markedly from submitted images.
Juror's decisions are final. All works must be clearly identified by
artist and title, and ready to exhibit. Retrieval deadline for all
works in the exhibition is Saturday, Mar. 29, 2008.
Mail
digital images on CD ROM, entry form and fees to: Individual Artists of
Oklahoma, P. O. Box 60824, Oklahoma City, OK 73146–0824 or deliver to:
IAO Gallery, 811 N. Broadway, in Oklahoma City, Wednesday. Gallery
hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday 12–5:30 p.m. and Fridays,
Noon–8 p.m.
Artists
may enter three 3 works. For mixed media entries, artists may submit 2
images for each work (for a total of 6 images). Images must be in
the form of digital JPEG files. Digital submissions must be jpeg files
of at least 3" x 5" with 300 pixels per inch (900 x 1500 pixels), and
minimally compressed ("high" or "maximum" quality). When naming digital
files, please use numbers corresponding to image list (for
example, "image-1.jpg").
For
installation entries, artists must submit a concept statement,
sketch/photo/video of finished installation, overview floor plan
showing required wall and floor space, a list of equipment, and other
three dimensional elements. Resume and slides of past art work
(installation or otherwise) are also encouraged. If
images or proposals do not meet the above standards, IAO will be
unable to show them to the juror.
Individual
Artists of Oklahoma will retain images and other documentation of
accepted art works for exhibition documentation. Digital files, and
support material of non-accepted work will be discarded unless artists
include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
IAO
can assume no liability for replacement of damaged or stolen
art—artists must insure their own work. Artists are responsible for
safe delivery and timely pickup of art work.
Please
type or print clearly. Make check or money order payable to Individual
Artists of Oklahoma. • Send completed form, entry fee, or digital
images, support material, and self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

Erotic Art Wanted and New
Openings
ArtWorks Reception at OHM
“As an artist, it is
my desire to combine both the physical and emotional worlds in my
paintings. During this process of integrating the two through paint, I
find hope,” said Michelle Firment Reid,
a featured artist in the art on shARTel series at the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum.
Tulsa
artist Reid is one of four Oklahoma artist groups whose works will be
on display during 2008 in the Tulsa World Gallery at the Oklahoma City
Museum. The series also features Paul Medina, Oklahoma City, a group of
Ponca City artists and Paul Mays, Oklahoma City. “The Gaylord-Pickens
Museum focuses on telling Oklahoma’s story through its people,” said
Karlee Chill, director of museum exhibitions. “The artists we are
privileged to showcase this year are a tribute to our state’s
creativity, talent and passion.”
While the
artwork remains in keeping with the Museum’s mission, it’s a sharp
contrast to other displays in the 22,000 square feet of exhibit space.
The high-tech, interactive Museum is filled with plasma screen
televisions, computer screens, touch screens and even sound recording
booths.
“We have
created a museum experience unlike anything else you’ll find in the
state,” said Chill. “Student and adult visitors alike have enjoyed
experiencing the history of our state’s people through very
unconventional means. Because visitors can touch and interact with the
majority of our exhibits, they become very engaged in what they’re
learning.”
Just as
visitors can get a unique look into the lives of famous Oklahomans like
Reba McEntire, Wiley Post and Shannon Miller through video displays,
they can get a glimpse into Reid’s soul through her series From Here to
There, which includes paint and mixed media. Reid’s work will be on
display at the Museum from Jan. 15 to March 20. A grand opening event
will be held for Reid’s show on Thursday, Jan. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at
the Museum. The event is free to the public.
Medina’s
series also will include mixed media and will show from May 10 to July
3. A variety of artists from Ponca City, whose art will include paint,
mixed media and sculpture, will show from July 8 to Sept. 24, and Mays’
mixed media art will be on display from Sept. 26 to Dec. 31. For
information on opening events for the remaining three shows in 2008,
visit www.oklahomaheritage.com.
The
Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum is located at NW 13th Street

Biting the Apple 2008 Call for Entries
Individual
Artists of Oklahoma presents...
Biting the Apple 2008: "Erotica
in Wonderland" Friday, April 11th & Saturday, April 12th
2008, 7-11p.m. at 811 North Broadway, Oklahoma City on Historic
Automobile Alley
CALL FOR ENTRIES
Individual Artists of Oklahoma announces the 17th Annual BITING THE
APPLE ART EXHIBITION to be hosted at our fabulous Gallery Space on
Historic Automobile Alley. This year's theme is Erotica in
Wonderland, and as the name suggests, we wish to provide, through the
artworks selected for exhibition, a "journey down the rabbit hole". IAO
is interested in erotic works, as well as art that deconstructs, or
investigates the mechanisms behind our perceptions of eroticism or
sexuality in individuals and culture.
Rainer Maria Rilke said, "Bodily Delight is a sensory experience…it is
a great, infinite learning that is given to us, acknowledge of the
world, the fullness and the splendor of all knowledge." Few
themes are persuasive and relevant as the role of erotica in human
culture, especially when perceptions of both what is erotic and what is
art fluctuate. Nude portraits of Boticelli's angels or
Mapplethorpe's photographs have been socially regarded as lewd or
obscene. As time progresses and various art movements or periods
replace each other, people's attitudes have altered to the extent where
the artwork is subjected to individual standards from both the audience
and the artist. Biting the Apple intends to provide a venue for
artists and audiences to explore and broaden this controversial, but
otherwise unresolved topic.

Current
Realities: a Dialogue
with the People
More
than 60 prominent artists will offer artwork that speaks to the current
realities of American Indians in Oklahoma, 100 years after statehood.
This invitational exhibition will feature members of the OklaDADA group,
as well as other contemporary Indian artists who have a relationship to
Oklahoma. The Oklahoma state centennial creates an opportunity for the
Native community to speak to the dichotomous relationship between the
tribal community and the state.
"We are
not in
a reactionary mode with regard to the Centennial. The state is
celebrating the past 100 years according to how they understand it. It
is essential that one of the many voices expresses during the
Centennial should be that of the American Indian artists." - Richard
Ray Whitman
oklaDADA
is a
collective of Indian Artists networking and promoting Indigenous
perspectives to create opportunities that give voice to Indian cultural
identities.
oklaDADA
began
as a meeting, in November 2005, of a group of American Indian artists
and other individuals from the community with the desire to support
Indian Artists and to establish a networking organization that would
help cultivate a fertile environment where Oklahoma Artists would no
longer feel the need to leave the state of Oklahoma to achieve success.

Four
Letter Word LOVE
The new
installation Four Letter Word L*O*V*E will feature an exhibition of
Mail Art from around the world. Please join us for a lunch time opening
reception Thursday, February 14th at 12PM Invited Artist Gallery, In
the Underground Downtown OKC.
The
Invited Artist Gallery, located in the Downtown Oklahoma City
Underground Tunnels, hosts quarterly exhibitions curated by art
professionals in Oklahoma. Four Letter Word: L*O*V*E* is curated by
Sarah Hearn.
This
exhibition will showcase a type of artwork rarely seen in Oklahoma and
encourages local participation in an international network. What is
mail art? Mail art is simply any original work of art sent through the
postal system. This movement gained momentum in the 1950’s and has a
rich history dating back to the early 1800’s. Although many well-known
artists have participated in the movement, critics and collectors often
overlook mail art. This is probably because to be a recipient of mail
art, one must also send it!
Regular
Underground and Gallery hours are 6 am- 8 pm, Monday through Friday.
The Gallery is located in the The Underground beneath Robinson Ave and
Robert S. Kerr. Enter through Broadway-Kerr Parking Garage or
Leadership Square. The exhibition remains on display through April
4 For more information call 235-3500.
“We
recognize that arts and culture serve as important economic drivers and
contribute to the vibrancy of our downtown renaissance, said Brett
Hamm, president, of Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. “We appreciate Devon’s
leadership, vision and support of the Underground’s Invited Artist
Gallery.” For More info go to www.downtownokc.com

Dinner
in the Deuce Panel Discussion
Functional
art and artistic collaboration inspired the dining environments
exhibited in Dinner in the Deuce and will be the focus of a panel
discussion on Friday, February 22. The panel will feature the lead
designers for several of the tables in Dinner in the Deuce, with other
designers, architects, and artists from the exhibition in attendance.
Their collaborative efforts and innovative approaches to creating
functional dining tables will be the subjects of the discussion.
The panel discussion will begin at 6:30 pm and will be followed by a
question and answer session. Anthony McDermid of TAParchitecture in
Oklahoma City will moderate the event. McDermid is a founding
principal at TAParchitecture and his portfolio includes The Factory in
Bricktown, the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary
Medicine, the Oklahoma Judicial Center, the City Rescue Mission, and
Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. He received his Bachelor of
Architecture at the University of Manchester in England and is a member
of the Royal Institute of British Architects and American Institute of
Architects.
Dinner in the Deuce is an exhibition of fourteen dining environments
designed by artists from Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. The exhibition
showcases how practical objects can develop into installation art. The
artists handcrafted everything from the silverware to the chairs to the
tablecloths and their work displays the ingenuity of design that can be
brought to everyday life. The exhibition closes February 23, the day
after the panel discussion.

Hammerpress
ADCT
Presents Hammerpress was founded in 1994 by Brady Vest after attending
the Kansas City Art Institute. With a fascination of letterpress and a
completely motorless Chandler & Price Platen Press, he began
printing CD and LP packages for poor and penniless art school rock ‘n
roll friends.
Now, with
several presses (all of which have motors, thankfully) and hundreds of
drawers of lead type, Hammerpress operates with a small crew creating
everything from wedding invitations to custom artwork for national
restaurant chains, CD packaging, corporate identity, posters and art
prints, as well as an ever-growing line of letterpress stationery
products. Don’t miss your chance to see them all.

CALL4ART
Individual
Artists of Oklahoma announces the 17 th Annual BITING THE APPLE ART
EXHIBITION to be hosted at our fabulous Gallery Space on Historic
Automobile Alley. This year's theme is Erotica in Wonderland, and
as the name suggests, we wish to provide, through the artworks selected
for exhibition, a "journey down the rabbit hole". IAO is interested in
erotic works, as well as art and performances that deconstructs, or
investigates the mechanisms behind our perceptions of eroticism or
sexuality in individuals and culture.
Rainer
Maria Rilke said, "Bodily Delight is a sensory experience…it
is a great, infinite learning that is given to us, acknowledge of the
world, the fullness and the splendor of all knowledge." Few themes are
persuasive and relevant as the role of erotica in human culture,
especially when perceptions of both what is erotic and what is art
fluctuate . Nude portraits of Boticelli's angels or Mapplethorpe's
photographs have been socially regarded as lewd or obscene. As time
progresses and various art movements or periods replace each other,
people's attitudes have altered to the extent where the artwork is
subjected to individual standards from both the audience and the
artist. Biting the Apple intends to provide a venue for artists and
audiences to explore and broaden this controversial, but otherwise
unresolved topic. More at http://www.myspace.com/iaogallery

Since

Oklahoma Artists will be on display February 28 – March 30, 2008.
“We
are proud of OVAC’s history of supporting artists all over the state,”
says OVAC Executive Director Julia Kirt. “This exhibition encapsulates
some of the important programs that help artists. Looking at the past
promotional posters, I am reminded of the amazing artwork that has been
exhibited, sold and viewed through the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition’s
programs.”
According
to OVAC’s Board President Pam Hodges, Ph.D., the Anniversary Exhibit is
“not only an excellent example of good graphic design, but also a
reminder of the excellent opportunities that OVAC has provided for
Oklahomans to participate in the visual arts during the past 20 years.”
The
many programs of the organizations are designed to support visual
artists living in Oklahoma. This includes grants, professional support,
