Here yee, here yee...

Small
Light of Hope by M. Yantz
I
would like to announce the opening of GreenArtMag.com! The purpose of
this online magazine is to inform the world about the exceptional
artwork, galleries, museums and artsy activities in Oklahoma. Living in
Oklahoma for the past few years has taught me there are wonderful
artists and art venues in Oklahoma, but that doesn't mean they know
about each other. I have learned that education, knowledge and
partnership is the best way to flourish an arts community.
The mission of GreenArtMag.com is "to
be the most accurate and complete website for fine arts in Oklahoma and surounding areas."
As you can see, I hope to carry a lot of information that can be
accessed to the links to the left. This front page will be updated with
art reviews, articles, press releases and notes a few times every week.
Calendar, Call 4 Art, Links, Museums and Gallery listings are free. If you
have a press release for an upcoming show send it and a web ready
picture and I will try to post it based on time and space. Email them
to info@greenartmag.com. This site will succeed with everyone's
support and advertising. Advertising on this site can be purchased
monthly or yearly. I will have an introductory price list for anyone
doing art activities or business in Green Country or surrounding areas.
My first focus are art activites in the Tulsa, Tahlequah and the Five
Civilized Tribes areas, but I hope to list activities around the whole
state and surrounding areas. Please feel free to contact me with
comments and information.

Dr. J. W. Wiggins Native
American Collection
The J. W. Wiggins Native
American Art Collection is on
display at the University of
Arkansas Little Rock. The opening was last Thursday with a
reception that included former UALR Dean and Professor, J. W. Wiggins
and a keynote speech by noted Lakota
artist Arthur Amiotte. Wiggins wanted the art to
be displayed in a salon style not seen often in museums today. The
gallery's walls were covered with paintings from floor to ceiling.
Sculptural objects were scattered throughout the gallery without
labels. Dr. Wiggins explained the first exhibit of his collection, "is
to show the forest. We can look at the trees later." The UALR Curators
even posted disclaimers in front of the gallery entrances explaining
the salon style exhibit was Wiggins concept. The Wiggins Collection
consists of Native American artwork that stretches from Oklahoma up the
Plains and into the Arctic. Dr. Wiggins has supported Oklahoma Native
Artists for over three decades. Some of these artists were on hand for
the reception including Ben Harjo Jr., Virgina Stroud and Victoria
Vasquez. The collection has been permanently given to the university
for research and display. This exhibit is up in UALR Fine Art Building
through December 2nd. More info HERE.

3 NSU Seniors, 1 NICE Show
From the street I saw
a blue nude waving me into the NSU Gallery in Tahlequah last night.
What I first thought was a photograph turned out to be a wonderful
blending of blues draw by Yoshie Shibata, one of three seniors from
Northeastern State University's Fine Art Dept display their work. All three students
have a wide range of work including digital, watercolor, ceramic and
pastels. Kevin Hart's mono types exhibited a soothing range of colors
that relaxed the mind and slowed time down for a moment. Melissa Dill's
vivid watercolors were nicely framed with extra large black or white
mat to add depth and help the viewer focus on the colors dancing
throughout the piece. NSU has a wonderful class of students from their
Arts Department and this show displays a very nice sample. The show is
up now through November 4th. NSU Gallery is located at 323
N. Muskogee Ave ~ 918.456.5511 ext.4604.

Partnerships, Learn from others
I have been a preacher of partnerships
for awhile now, but being an artist, it's hard to let the creative
fence down long enough to explore another artists world. I was able to
share my creativity with another wonderful artist this weekend. I
participated in a workshop on cooperation from our friends at NZT
Designs (see the ad to the right) Artists are creative individuals, but
not always team players. I challenge all artists to talk with an open
minded friend that you have not worked with and put a peice a paper in
between both of you. 2 pencils, 1 hour and 0 expectations can create
priceless artwork and a wonderful expereince. J and I would like to
thank our friends at NZT. What a wonderful weekend!!

McCarter and Marie Proctor, were named Tradition Keepers at this year’s

Proctor was honored for her skills in basket making. “Our goal is to

Collaboration Creates
Creativity
The newest
exhibit at M.A. Doran Gallery displays individual and collaborative
works from Ron Fleming and Linda Stilley. The mixed medium pieces
collaborate copper and wood to create forms that glow on their own. The
wood carvings of Ron Fleming, including "Fandango," look as though
leaves have fallen from the sky to create an artists and beautiful
vessel, perfect for this time of the year. The copper spheres, like
“Celestial Orb,” use the bright painting styles of Linda Stilley with
the sculptural forms of Ron. This piece glows without any light at all.
The show continues November 25th. Also check out the galleries other
artists including the great realistic oil paintings of Otto Duecker.

Trail of Tears for a reservation in the northwest corner of Arkansas

'Sequoyah jackets,' similar to the one pictured above, beaded bandolier
bags, a hand embroidered leather hunting jacket, woven belts and

the nation. The exhibit is up until December 31st. For more info: CherokeeHeritage.org

Expand your mind, you're an
artist
Many artists
go through life trying to find "it." (No I'm not talking about the
newest eBay marketing gimmick.) Finding your own style is very
important to artists to have them stick out from the crowd and get
notice by buyers and galleries. If you are lucky enough to find a style
to place your flag in and say "I dub this art in the name of me." I
envy you. I respect style, uniqueness, innovation and art in general,
which leads me to my point.....try something new! There are numerous
art exhibitions that are available to artists at low entry fees at
established galleries. Some are 12x12 shows, others have a certain
theme, etc. The point of having a theme show is to have original work
by artist who normally don't do it. It’s exciting for the gallery and
buyers to have the opportunity to purchase an original piece from an
artist who may never pick up another 12x12 canvas again. Don’t let
rules or themes scare you from trying new stuff. Your style is
important, and I'm sure it can fit on a smaller canvas.

Freedom of Speech & Art -
Thank you Veterans
War is a passionate
subject that has been marked in history through words, action and art.
The soldiers who risked their life for us should not to ones you feel a
persons frustration with current politics. The soldiers are the ones
who have volunteered to leave their families and lives to protect our
freedom regardless of personal opinion. The veterans have ensured our
right to do art. And some of them are artists too. Take Grady Estle
Harp. Born in 1941 in Enid Oklahoma. Grady served in Vietnam with the
Navy assigned to the Marine Corps 7th Fleet Special Landing Forces from
1968-69. He is also a poet. Grady is one of 125 Vietnam Veterans who
have works in the permanent collection of the National
Vietnam Veteran Art Museum located in Chicago Illinois. The
museum's mission, "inspires greater understanding of the real impact of
war with a focus on Vietnam. The museum collects, preserves and
exhibits art inspired by combat and created by veterans."
I encourage you to thank our veterans for your freedoms. As an artist,
I thank them for protecting my expression, inspiration and creativity.
Thank you veterans, thank you DAD.

Survey Says...
Here are just some of the
response from our "What do you want in an art group?" survey.
The answers are unedited below in green from some of our readers.
Thanks to everyone who replied. I wish I had the room to list them all.
1)How much is a reasonable
annual fee?
- I
think the fee I would be willing to pay greatly depends upon what the
organization is offering me. Most local organizations run between
$25-$30 and I think that is reasonable. National organizations offering
possible exposure of your work to a wider audience would constitute a
much higher fee.
- $50
-$24-$90 depending on
benefits of membership.
2)How
many shows should the group offer?
- Shows
are the soul reason I join these organizations. Yes I enjoy having the
opportunity to converse with other artists sharing ideas etc, and
educational opportunities are important to me as well but bottom line I
need exposure as an artist. With being said I expect multiple
opportunities to show throughout the year. I want the opportunity for
at least one or two open calls and opportunities to be a part of juried
exhibitions as well.
- two solid shows per
year - large, good location, well promoted shows
-12. one
per month. no, i'm not kidding.
3)Should
their be different levels of membership rates?(student,
family, individual, etc)
- As
a student I was only a part of the organizations that offered special
rates specifically for students. Usually the student rate was around
$10-$15 a annually. Most of the organizations I joined as a student I
have continued to be a part of after graduation. Because of the special
rates I was able to find out as a student how valuable an artist
organization could be to me as a professional. A family membership is
always appreciated at my household considering we have a houseful of
artists. In fact we will sometimes choose one organization over the
other because of family membership opportunities.
- no -- a member is a
member, regardless of their stature
-yes.
student, individual, benefactor.
4)What
opportunities do you expect?
- Well
shows of course as I mentioned in a previous question but here are a
few of the other things I enjoy about well planned artist
organizations. Seminars and educational opportunities that directly
relate to me as an artist, especially those about the "business" of
promoting yourself as an artist. Information of all sorts is
invaluable; calls for entry, calender of events, other opportunities
professionally, fellowships etc. are all a plus. Also social events
that offer the possibility of interacting with other artists. All too
often there are more business meetings (which are fine, they have to be
done) than gatherings that have a fun laid back tone.
- networking! I need
to meet a patron!
-shows.
people attending the shows that aren't just other artists who
can't afford to buy art. some kind of accessible online network for
people to browse through artist-members.
5)How
many volunteer hours would you give in a year?
- I
currently volunteer an average of about 5 or 6 hours a week with one
organization and about 2-3 hours a week with another. If the group is
something I feel passionately about or I think it's a progressive
organization that will greatly benefit me as well as my community I
will give as much time as I can spare.
- 10 or 15
-probably
one to three days. time is as precious as money.
6)Is
the group required to have a website or online group site?
-
Online
activity is a must in this day and age. I don't think I would be a part
of a group that wasn't web savvy because I would assume they were not
progressive enough to keep up with the modern art community or stay
fresh and cutting edge among the art world.
- OF COURSE!!! this
is 2006, to not have a website (when they're easy and cheap) is hard to
imagine
-a website
absolutely. this isn't really optional anymore is it?
7)What
one feature would make you join a group?
- A
great concept or show opportunity is usually what first attracts me to
an organization.
- opportunity -- to
get shown, to meet people
-i would
ask myself, how many shows can i be in? then i would ask
myself, how credible is this group? then i would ask myself, what other
artists are in the group? then i would ask myself, can i afford it?
then i would ask myself, can i afford not to be in it?
8)How
many meetings a month do you expect to attend?
- One is usually all I would expect
unless there are special circumstances.
- one
-zero, but
if it were convenient and cost me nothing to attend, i might attend
them all, if i had time.
9)Should
the art group be a federally recognized non profit 501c(3)?
- I would think that it would be
greatly beneficial to the organization. Several fund-raising
opportunities would be possible as 501c(3).
-i think so. but i
came from the non-profit world, so i'm biased.
10)What
experiences, good and bad, have you had with artist groups that
others could learn from?
- All
the organizations that I had good experiences with have a few things in
common. First of all they have been very positive and progressive
thinking. Secondly they were organized and well planned. And finally
they have offered "real" exposure that brought about selling
opportunities.
- The
organizations that have been less than desirable were ran with judgment
and animosity that seemed to have come from a lack of understanding for
what a real professional artist needs and needs to be, which in a word
is free! Free to express them self vocally and visually without
judgment. Predisposed opinions of what art is, is a dangerous thing for
a group organization.
-i am an ovac member
and think ovac is great and i don't take advantage
of all of the benefits of membership admittedly. however, they have
very few shows each year, and because i'm over 30, i can't be in the

Local artist makes a 'Changing' impact
In the
latest issue of American
Indian Art Magazine, W. Jackson Rushing II does a review of
the traveling exhibit Changing
Hands: Art Without Reservation 2 scheduled to be at the
Philbrook Museum beginning January 28 - April 22, 2007. Oklahoma and
Cherokee artist Demo Glass has his piece Encirclement in the show. Here are
some excerpts.
"Material
Evidence. The Artists in this section 'celebrate the physical worlds of
materials,' although that could be said of the most of the artists in
the exhibition. Notable works here include... Demos Glass's Encirclement (above)
is a refined objet d'art, with two curvaceous abstract forms drawn to
each other. Reminiscent of Allan Houser's biomorphic abstractions, such
as Next
Generation II,
the two evocative shapes are conjoined by a medallion featuring a
circle inscribed with a cross, a symbol of duality of earth and sky.
Poised and polished, and balancing warm and cool, Encirclement is the
quintessential marriage of craft, materials and artist vision. Glass is
a Cherokee artist living in Oklahoma, and he exemplifies the difficulty
of assigning contemporary Native art to regional categories."
Check out the Philbrook Museum for more information HERE.

Its all in the Networking
This
blog
is from talentspeaks.com
an open web discussion that invites the creative community
to
discover how web-based networking and unprecedented social connectivity
is quickly changing the art and entertainment industry as we know it.

by Gabriel Chapman
OK,
artists. You’ve been toiling in your studio. You make great art. You
are ready to do shows. Now what? Believe it or not, it is unlikely you
will get discovered by a great talent agent hiding in your basement who
will get you all the shows you can handle. You have to meet people. If
you want to be an artist that becomes posthumously famous, great. Be
anti-social, make great art, please will your work to someone you care
about, and then live as dangerously as possible.
For those that want to live and enjoy their success,
you will have
to start talking to people. Promoters, venue owners and bookers, other
artists, enthusiasts for your style of creation, and anyone else that
will listen. Talk about what you do. Show them. For a visual medium
carry around a portfolio or even a PDA. For musicians, carry around
your tracks on your ipod. You never know when you will meet someone
that will be interested in what you are up to and is willing to help
you. When people perk up, notice. Get their contact information. And
then, hold on, I bet you know what is coming… CONTACT THEM. There I
said it. Send them a nice email, or a quick personal call. Tell them it
was nice to meet them. If you have something to promote, bring it up
then. Ask them if you can put them on your mailing list. Find out if
you can do anything for them that is not to much trouble for you but
will help them out. Keep in touch with the people you connect with best
and you can work with well. As long as you have something to offer one
another, the relationship will bloom with a little care. So get up and
away from the studio for a bit and talk to some people. It will be good
for you.
Good
point eh?
